 The perfect amp, tone ?
« Thread Started on Jan 24, 2007, 1:14pm »

Im sure a lot of you have been on the relentless search for the perfect tone. Id like to hear what you guys are playing out there!Im never satisfied. Probably because I play half of my gigs on pedal steel, and im too lazy to lug 2 amps to the show. My dream amp would be the sound of a twin reverb (for steel) that only wieghed 25 lbs, and had a knob that could add some grit for the 6 string. Any suggestions?

Man that's an endless search you're talking about. LOL!!! I usually bring two amps to every gig just for back up in case something went down. I use a deluxe and a CS-2 for chickin pickin and a Splawn for hot rodded Marshall tone. I can cover pretty much all territory with that set up. I would love to have a twin instead of the deluxe but I'm lazy and don't want to lug it around everywhere. LOL!

honestly, I don't know ANYONE who's ever totally satisfied...and I do work for alot of pro guitarists! :)

Most are always searching for that elusive tone in their head...and many of them have tried ALOT of different equipment.

I don't even think that exsists I think all of us are gonna always be in search of that killer tone,I think that's a never ending quest.Been using a 65 reissue Twin for a while with pretty good results. My buddy Johnny Hiland turned me onto the Celestion G12's and it bought the amp to life,it also took a few pounds off the amp also.I had problems with the stock speakers farting out on the low end,but the G12's took care of that.Hey Brian great to see you on here take care.Mark Moree aka DblStop

I use a Dr. Z Prescription for the crunch-tone. For country clean, I use two different amps at various gigs. The one is an original 1964 Twin w/ orig.cone JBL D-120's, grey frames. The other is an Alessandro Redbone, 55-watts class-A. The Redbone runs two boxes, one with an orig, orange JBL D-120, the other box an orig. orange-frame JBL D-130. I use a fairly large pedal board with both amps for different sounds/textures. I play a Nashville Tele (American) w/ b-bender for country gigs. This is, for me, the ULTIMATE setup. Both of the amps I described sound absolutely, positively incredible, they have the oh-so-hard-to-find sparkle-tone of yesteryear with the JBL's. Good luck, CB

I have a buddy who plays steel and lead guitar. I will have to ask him exactly what the setup is, but I know he has a pretty cool one. He has one of the Marshall 4x12 cabinets that is stereo wired and two heads plugged into it. It takes up less space than separate amps and he loves it. I think the head for the steel is a fender, but I will have to check. I will get back with you.

apiazza, I've gotta Music Man RD-50 on the way that has 50 watts and a solid state preamp for the clean tone and uses a 12ax7 for the distortion side w/2 6l6gc output side. It has an EV 12 S pro line speaker rated at 300 watts and reverb. They are supposed to be a very loud 50 watts and might fit your needs very well. I'm pretty excited about mine. Between the 50 watt Music Man and my Rivera designed 18 watt Fender ChampII I should have all my bases covered.

Well, I'd add that it depends on what you're chasing - if it's a recorded sound of someone else's you just love then it can be hard to reproduce this live, no matter what you use.

To prove a point (or not): years ago my band was lucky enough to open for Jerry Lee Lewis at Wembley Arena, England, a big venue by UK standards. You should have seen the faces of the sound guys when I walked in carrying an 18watt Fender Super-Champ and proceeded to DI it into the front-line system - with our regular, trusted sound guy out front, of course.

Their expressions changed when they heard the mighty out-front sound... and this was after an upgrade from the original silver-face 6w Champ I used before that for awhile. I wired a feed from the pre-amp to a DI-send socket and toured this for ages, with a warm, fat valve sound really I loved.

But it does mean you're have to be working with great monitoring, or forget this approach - our whole band DI'ed at this point, quite successfully, once we'd got our heads around working like this.

Bottom Line: No matter what I've tried since, I still think that little original Champ sound though the rig came pretty close to my perfect live country lead sound. But maybe not yours, of course.

Anyway, happy hunting!

for tele/country picking, a fender deluxe is hard to beat. i ordered a 65' reissue deluxe and boy was i disappointed with the tones when it came in. remedy: an eminence cannabis rex speaker and a full re-tube with anything except what fender puts in them. a short break in period for the speaker and voila! TONE!

I have a Line 6 Spider model. I hate it! For 1, it's either too loud or too quiet.

I play through 2 different amps. a 76 marshall 30 watt combo, and a genz benz, tubeworks 60 watt with a 2x12 cab. I primarily play through the tubeworks for my clean tones. It has reverb and compressor built into the amp. It works great for my tele.

I use the marshall for my dirty tones. It breaks up exactly when I want it to. It works great with my strat, but my tele seems too either too thin or too muddy with it. I cant get it to cooperate.

When i was 19 I had an original 72 super reverb. I got rid of it before i left for the military. I'll never quit kicking myself for that.

I dont think I will ever find the perfect tone. I can get a good tone out of almost anything with tubes, but Its always gonna be something stuck in my head. The more I experiment the closer I get but its getting to the point were my appetite is reaching beyond my finances.

I would say for a combo, I'd use a Rivera Quiana for a one amp fits all. Does better fender twin reverb tone than the other 6 Rivera's I've had (by far). Still has the great leads and boost options for regular six string. For pedal steel, maybe change out the speakers. I'm about ot put hellatone 30's in mine.....

I'm using a Dr Z Stangray head with an open back/2X12 Celestion Blues, Dr Z Maz 38 head with Zbest and a Victoria Victorilux 3X10. The Stangray always delivers exactly what I want. Sometimes I really love the Victoria and other times I'm not thrilled with what comes out of it. But I realize its me. It doesn't much matter what amp you use, its your technique that is going to get that perfect tone you strive for. Thats why those who search for it in the "Perfect amp" never find it.
For me the 3X10 speakers makes me work a little harder for the tone I look for but it can be rewarding. The 2X12 configuration for me is a little more effortless. I just have to remember that I'm not going to get out of the 3X10 what I expect out of the 2X12. Thats just me. In an amp I find more difference between different speaker configurations than I do across amps of the same type or even 6L6 versus EL84.
But in the end I always remember that tone is in the head and in the fingers.
